Teaching the Names of Allah to Children: Fun and Meaningful Ways
The 99 Names of Allah are not just vocabulary to memorize — they are a child's first conversation with their Creator. Here is how to make them stick.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Allah has ninety-nine names, one hundred less one; whoever memorizes them will enter Paradise.” (Bukhari and Muslim)
Teaching the Names of Allah to our children is one of the most beautiful gifts we can give them. It is not about rote memorization — it is about helping them know their Creator.
Start with the names they need most
Do not try to teach all 99 at once. Begin with the names that speak to a child’s daily life:
- Ar-Rahman (The Most Merciful) — when your child falls and you comfort them: Allah is the Most Merciful. He sent me to help you.
- Al-Khaliq (The Creator) — when they see a butterfly or a sunset: Who made this? Allah, the Creator of everything.
- Al-Razzaq (The Provider) — before meals: Allah gives us food. He is Ar-Razzaq.
- Al-Wadud (The Loving) — when they feel sad or lonely: Allah loves you more than anyone ever could.
- Al-Ghaffar (The Forgiving) — when they make a mistake: Allah forgives when we ask Him. He is Al-Ghaffar.
Make it multisensory
Children learn through their senses. Here is what works:
- Flashcards: Print one Name per card with the Arabic, transliteration, and a simple meaning. Show one card per day. Our 99 Names of Allah Flashcards are designed exactly for this.
- Wall display: Stick the Names around the house at their eye level. The kitchen, the bedroom, the playroom.
- Daily routine: Say one Name together every morning. Today, we are learning Al-Lateef — the Subtle, the Gentle. Can you show me something gentle?
- Songs and rhymes: Children remember melodies far better than lectures. There are beautiful nasheeds that teach the Names.
Use real-life moments
The most powerful teaching happens in ordinary moments:
- Your child shares a toy? That was kind! Allah is Al-Kareem, the Generous. He loves when we share.
- They are scared of the dark? Say: “Ya Allah, Ya Noor” — O Allah, O Light. He will protect you.
- They are eating their favourite food? Alhamdulillah! Allah is Ar-Razzaq. He gave you this because He loves you.
