Early Primary (5–7)

Phonics, early math, Quran memorisation in earnest, Islamic studies stories, and a one-page weekly plan.

What to focus on at this age

This is where formal learning begins. Short sessions, lots of variety, and one weekly plan.

Quran memorisation

This is the prime age for memorisation. Start with the short surahs they already know from preschool, then move to longer ones (up to Ad-Duha). A few lines per day, consistent review, and gentle repetition. The Quran Memorization Log is designed for this.

Arabic reading

Move from letter recognition to reading simple words. Harakat, sukun, and shaddah are introduced. The goal is to read the Quran with proper pronunciation, not fluency in Arabic. The Arabic Alphabet Chart supports this.

English phonics and reading

This is the year reading clicks. Phonics instruction, simple readers, and lots of library books. Islamic-themed early readers are ideal but hard to find — we recommend the ones we use in the Shop.

Math foundations

Number recognition to 100, addition and subtraction within 20, place value basics, and introduction to shapes and measurement. The Math Practice Sheet works well for this age.

Islamic Studies stories

Seerah stories, prophet stories, and the lives of the sahabah. At this age, children absorb details like a sponge. One short story per day with discussion is more effective than a longer lesson once a week.

The weekly plan

The Homeschool Weekly Planner is the most-used printable for this age. One page, one week. Fill in the subject rows, pin it to the wall, and tick off what happens. The "we did it" row at the bottom is the most important part.

The planner that carries the week.

One page, one week, the whole family on it. The printable we use most.
